  25. The intention of this work is to enable a viewer to
  26. experience obscured or nearly forgotten narrativesnarratives
  27. of memory, time, absence, location and
  28. representation. The works utilise found and constructed
  29. objects and techniques from the visual arts, the museum,
  30. the library, the shop, the garden.
  31. One common methodology is the arrangement of multiple
  32. objects to activate a surface optically, and encourage a
  33. viewer to read it as a means of temporarily holding the
  34. objects in place. In doing so they find themselves part of
  35. the work. These pieces are experiments in understanding
  36. how viewers can travel around an artwork and in this
  37. process move their position back and forth, flickering
  38. between past and present and personal and national
  39. memory. Most works incorporate ideas of movement or
  40. stasis either technically or in the story which they may be
  41. partially relating to the viewer.
  42. This suggestion of waiting or of motion summons a viewer
  43. to enter into the work as a timekeeper. This is an anxious
  44. position where many of the materials inviting curiosity,
  45. and initially implying the humorous, accrue a sinister edge
  46. as the viewer reaches a point of understanding his/her
  47. caged predicament within the work. For the first time all these works will be exhibited together.
  48. Showing them in different locations raised considerations
  49. of setting both spatial and conceptual - and recent works
  50. have developed that are about journeying across time and
  51. place.
  52. The investigation has emerged from very personal
  53. considerations of the place of memory, forgetting, loss,
  54. denial and the potency of the past within my own family.
  55. Artists who have explored similar terrain, visually
  56. reconfiguring the marginal or the textual, include Gordon
  57. Bennett, Fiona Foley, Tracey Moffatt, Christian Boltanski
  58. and Fred Wilson.
  59. This project has been a journey through many stories
  60. across time. These have inevitably been incorporated into
  61. my own memory, my own life, and my own increasingly
  62. open narrative of deciphering self in the process of relating
  63. the past. Each work has been built from the outcomes of
  64. the last, and represents a claiming within a larger
  65. consideration of ways to personally invoke and involve

  252. visually reconfigure aspects of concealed or disputed pasts.'&#13;
  253. The intention of this work is to enable a viewer to&#13;
  254. experience obscured or nearly forgotten narrativesnarratives&#13;
  255. of memory, time, absence, location and&#13;
  256. representation. The works utilise found and constructed&#13;
  257. objects and techniques from the visual arts, the museum,&#13;
  258. the library, the shop, the garden.&#13;
  259. One common methodology is the arrangement of multiple&#13;
  260. objects to activate a surface optically, and encourage a&#13;
  261. viewer to read it as a means of temporarily holding the&#13;
  262. objects in place. In doing so they find themselves part of&#13;
  263. the work. These pieces are experiments in understanding&#13;
  264. how viewers can travel around an artwork and in this&#13;
  265. process move their position back and forth, flickering&#13;
  266. between past and present and personal and national&#13;
  267. memory. Most works incorporate ideas of movement or&#13;
  268. stasis either technically or in the story which they may be&#13;
  269. partially relating to the viewer.&#13;
  270. This suggestion of waiting or of motion summons a viewer&#13;
  271. to enter into the work as a timekeeper. This is an anxious&#13;
  272. position where many of the materials inviting curiosity,&#13;
  273. and initially implying the humorous, accrue a sinister edge&#13;
  274. as the viewer reaches a point of understanding his/her&#13;
  275. caged predicament within the work. For the first time all these works will be exhibited together.&#13;
  276. Showing them in different locations raised considerations&#13;
  277. of setting both spatial and conceptual - and recent works&#13;
  278. have developed that are about journeying across time and&#13;
  279. place.&#13;
  280. The investigation has emerged from very personal&#13;
  281. considerations of the place of memory, forgetting, loss,&#13;
  282. denial and the potency of the past within my own family.&#13;
  283. Artists who have explored similar terrain, visually&#13;
  284. reconfiguring the marginal or the textual, include Gordon&#13;
  285. Bennett, Fiona Foley, Tracey Moffatt, Christian Boltanski&#13;
  286. and Fred Wilson.&#13;
  287. This project has been a journey through many stories&#13;
  288. across time. These have inevitably been incorporated into&#13;
  289. my own memory, my own life, and my own increasingly&#13;
  290. open narrative of deciphering self in the process of relating&#13;
  291. the past. Each work has been built from the outcomes of&#13;
  292. the last, and represents a claiming within a larger&#13;
  293. consideration of ways to personally invoke and involve&#13;
  294. nation, viewer and self in acknowledging our entangled&#13;
  295. histories.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" border="0" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Thesis (PhD)</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/410200.html">410000 The Arts &gt; 410200 Visual Arts and Crafts</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Collections:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">UNSPECIFIED</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">2644</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">UTas Digital Archives Librarian</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">10 Dec 2007 12:42</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">01 Feb 2008 11:24</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=2644;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=2644">item control page</a></p>
